Data Science (tenure-track professors)

Position description

The School of Information at the University of Michigan (UMSI) seeks tenured or tenure-track professors at the assistant, associate, or full level in the broad field of data science. Successful candidates will contribute to the research and service missions of the school and the university, and will be expected to teach courses related to applied data science in UMSI’s online and/or residential programs. We anticipate making up to two hires across the following overlapping areas of emphasis:

• Machine learning
• Causal inference from big data
• Social media analytics
• Learning analytics
• Healthcare or public health analytics
• Computational social science
• Computational humanities
• Fairness, accountability, and transparency
• Human computation

Job Expectations and Responsibilities

Job duties include research, teaching, and service. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Conducting scholarly research resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, edited books, books, and conference proceedings
• Seeking outside funding to support their research
• Teaching in UMSI’s five academic programs
• Mentoring students for independent studies, master’s projects and theses, and doctoral dissertations.
• Providing service to the school, University, and the broader academic community by way of committee work, journal editing, and other various opportunities

Each contributing member of the UMSI faculty is expected to have teaching effort equivalent to three semester-long courses per year.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. in an area such as information, computer science, statistics, health informatics, the humanities, social sciences, or other relevant area
• A strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• A strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and cultural diversity

Desired Qualifications

• A proven record in teaching and research
